We are the students of Forest Oak Middle School in Montgomery County, Maryland. This January we decided to start an environmental club since our school didn’t have one. Our science teacher, Dr. Karl Keels, sponsors it, and we hold it after school. We started with about 20 or more students in each committee: including recycling, greenhouse, and sound-testing - all of which are student-organized.

The greenhouse was going to be a big project. It hadn’t even been touched for three years, so we were excited to be restoring it. We put a lot of hard work into the greenhouse: we assigned jobs to the students, ordered supplies, and got the heat to work again. The whole greenhouse committee had to do research on how to plant flowers successfully. We had a goal of planting flowers such as marigolds, zinnias, chrysanthemums, and morning glories. We were also planning on have a plant sale in May for Mother’s Day, and to plant flowers around the school to raise environmental awareness. We also had hopes of entering it for an award for the EPA and the White House.

On February 8th, under the weight of the enormous snow that fell in the three days prior, the greenhouse collapsed in on itself...and on all our hard work, and our hopes.
