THE FOREST OAK MIDDLE SCHOOL in GAITHERSBURG, MARYLAND
THE PRESIDENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL YOUTH MERIT AWARD
Today’s Youth Protecting Tomorrow’s Environment
The Environmental Club of Forest Oak Middle School located at 651 Saybrooke Oaks Blvd., Gaithersburg, Maryland was awarded the President of the United States Youth Merit Award for their Environmental Sound Project. The focus of the project was to find out how the sound levels in the environment of their school and community affected the people in those environments. The students were able to use their study of sound in the environment to measure sound levels (decibel). The results achieved from the data indicated that there are areas where people are exposed to frequent decibel levels that are high enough to cause health issues. They used the data for class room discussions, to draw conclusions, and to develop recommendations for improving these environments.
The Environmental Club is one of the largest student participatory organizations in the school with about one hundred students participating. The Environmental Club recycles paper in the school, develops posters that raise the environmental awareness in the school and community, helps develop the students photographic skills by documenting their efforts in the Photography Committee, measures sound levels in their environment with students participating in the Sound Testing Committee, measures energy consumption in the school and until recently, had restored the use of the school’s greenhouse to provide flowers for the community.
